Breaking News - 9/15/2003...
Based upon early feedback, and a desire to allow as many people as possible
to run, rather than work, the event will be run with a minimum of Checkpoints
and scoring that will be a combination of traditional Time-Speed-Distance
scoring (1 point for each 0.01 minute early or late at a checkpoint) and some
"fun" items like answering questions about things found along the route, etc.
More details will be emailed to all pre-registrants about 10 days before the
event.
Event Prospectus:
Last Fall we had a false start at this event, and since then there have been
several developments which have caused us to drop back a re-group on the event.
We have re-scheduled the event for October 18, 2003, with start and finish in
Chillicothe, Ohio.
As you may, or may not, know, the United States Auto Club (USAC) has begun
sanctioning special stage rallys. They hosted the Laughlin Rally last
December in Nevada, and are sanctioning Cherokee Trails in May of 2003. At
the Nevada event there were some VERY preliminary discussions about bringing
back an Ohio event under the USAC banner. If an event were to be added to
the USAC calendar (probably no earlier than 2005), we would first have to do a
LOT of groundwork, including the re-activation of the Sunriser 400 Committee and the identification of a route that would meet FIA standards.
The proposed event would be a dry-run of part of a route that would be part of a
proposed Sunriser 400 Forest Rally... We will be working on identification
of an event using the traditional Sunriser areas of Tar Hollow, Zaleski, and Scioto Trail forests, as well as some of our traditional township
roads. If run as a stage rally, about 60% of the stage mileage would
likely be paved. To meet the FIA specifications, we would
have to be able to present a rally with a single service area per day, which
means trying to establish a set of stages around a central service spot.
There are many other issues that also need to be addressed...
Our preliminary thought for the rejuvenated Sunriser would be a Columbus
Start / Headquarters, with each day of competition being focused upon one or two
of the forests, including some surrounding township roads. The proposed
CORC event will start/finish in Chillicothe and would likely represent one half
of one day
of the eventual Sunriser.
Sooooo.... We need to have some idea how many cars we might be able to
draw for the proposed Fall Phobia Rally. Please review
the information below and submit the interest / comment form so we can establish
the viability of this event.
Event Highlights:
This event will use the same route book format as the July, 2002 rally (mileages
and tulip instructions) and will traverse some of the roads used as special
stages on the Tulip 200 and the Sunriser 400 Forest Rally. Although all
roads will be paved, and the route will be VERY easy to follow. Speeds will be slow
enough to allow viewing the scenery, looking for things and generally
enjoying the route. Remember, as a TSD we must set average speeds below
the posted 30MPH typical speed limit in the Forests.
Visit the July web page for information on tulip style instructions and basic
time-keeping.
For a sample page from the route instructions, click
HERE If you print the
instruction page you will see the following...
The first column is the instruction number. The second column is the
interval mileage between turns. The third column is a Tulip diagram of the
turn (you enter at the dot and leave at the arrowhead). The fourth column
is the written instruction or confirmation information. The last column is
the interval time until you LEAVE that instruction's mileage point.

dirt roads. Although possibly a bit dusty, the route can easily be
traversed by most any type of car (including Tammy's Miata).
